Artcyclopedia - Start here if you are looking for a specific artist's work online. You can search through a database of online museums and image archives to find out where the work of more than 7,000 artists can be seen on the Web. It's a fast way to search a number of museums at once.

Worldwide Arts Resources - This site has links to a wealth of art-related information...commercial art galleries, museums around the world, artists, publications, and art exhibits online. It also has links to performing arts web sites.

Internet ArtResources - This is a very complete guide to visual arts resources on the Internet, including information on art galleries from a wide area. It has some wonderful images, but the graphics take a while to download.

Web Gallery of Art - The images featured on this site were created in Europe between 1200 and 1700. Search their database by artist, time period, country, subject or title.

Art History Resources on the Web - This compilation of art history resources was created by an art history professor. Its links are arranged in categories, such as Prehistoric, Ancient Art, Art of the Renaissance, and 20th Century Art. It provides an indepth look at art down through the ages.

TimeLife Photo Sight - Here you'll find some of the most memorable photos of all time. It has more than 20 million photographs taken on assignments for Life, Time, Fortune, Sports Illustrated and more.

THEATRE

Playbill - Find out what's playing on and off Broadway, in London, or just about anywhere. This site is searchable by show name, theatre name, location, cast or crew. It has loads of theatre news and gossip, photos and video clips. You can even buy your theatre tickets online.

Theatricopia - This is theWeb site for musical theatre lovers. If you want to know about a composer or performer, or you're trying to track down the lyrics to a show tune, try this collection of links all about musicals.

CurtainUp - The Internet Theatre Magazine of News and Reviews - This site will keep you up to date on what's happening in the theatre world, with feature stories, reviews, and quotes. It also indicates which shows are suitable for children in certain age groups to see.

Aisle Say - Before you see a show, check out the reviews on this site. It reviews plays from theatres around the U.S., as well as those playing on Broadway and ones touring nationally. You'll also find reviews of books and recordings.

On the Boards & In the Wings - This semi-monthly online column is filled with backstage gossip and current theatre news from Broadway, London, and around the world.

TheaterMania - This site covers theatre news from New York and London, but also has lots of information on theatre in places like Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles. You'll find reviews, interviews, contests, and video clips of shows. It also has information on theatre festivals around the U.S.

Theatrical Calamities - Backstage Stories - Want to find out what the audience never sees? This site has some hilarious stories about theatre hauntings, the perils of using live animals on stage, set designs gone awry, and much more. These anecdotes are sent in by actors, directors, stage managers and crew members

New York City Ballet - Learn what's happening at one of the nation's premier ballet companies. This site has news, schedules, trivia and puzzles. You can also order tickets online.

Cyber Dance - Ballet on the Net - This is a huge collection of links to classical ballet and modern dance resources on the Internet. It provides links to dance companies (both U.S. and international), schools and training programs, events, festivals, competitions, auditions, and more.

Sapphire Swan Dance Directory - This is a great guide to all kinds of dance resources on the Web. You'll find links to information on many forms of dance, from ballroom to square dancing.

A Dance is Worth Ten Thousand Words - This is an ambitious list of links to dance-related sites, including many international ones. There are also links to scholarly resources and archives.

Dance Online - This online magazine has the latest dance news, features, performance reviews and a message board.

Voice of Dance - This site is packed with information on the world of dance: current news and events, columns, reviews and message boards. You can also interact with dance professionals through live chats and e-mailed questions. International dance news is also covered.

Dance Art - This site has features, chat and message boards about ballet. You can also download a free screensaver of beautiful dance paintings.

Worldwide Internet Music Resources - Whether you're interested in rap or ragtime, Frank Sinatra or John Mellencamp, you'll probably find something here. The Indiana University Music Department maintains this site, which has a great list of links to academic music sites. It also has links to the web sites of specific artists.

Classical Net - This site probably has everything you ever wanted to know about classical music, plus links to other classical music sites. It covers classical music beginning with the medieval period and includes biographical information on composers and lists of their works.

MusicNewswire - Check this site for the latest music news on the Web. It has links to stories from sites like Rolling Stone, MTV, and Billboard.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame - Explore the artifacts and exhibits at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It has lots of graphics and information on the legends of Rock & Roll. The site is a little hard to navigate, but very interesting.

Life Rock & Roll Gallery - This Life magazine site has features on the Beatles, Rock Legends, Elvis, Rock Trivia, Rock & Roll Artifacts and more.

The Archive of MisHeard Lyrics - Ever feel really stupid when you realized that what you thought were the words to a song weren't the actual lyrics? At this site you can read the real lyrics along with what people thought they heard.

MUSEUMS

The Louvre Museum - Take a virtual tour of this famous Paris museum. (Requires a free download of Quicktime.)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art - You can browse through more than 3,500 works of art in this online collection from one of the world's greatest museums. They also feature art from special exhibitions.

Encyclopedia Smithsonian - This guide to the Smithsonian Institution allows you to search the entire contents of the Smithsonian's web site. It also has links to all of the Smithsonian's art museums.

The Natural History Museum - At the site of this British museum you can take a virtual tour of the Life, Earth and Mammal galleries.

Virtual Library Museum Pages - This directory will link you to some fascinating online museums. Just pick a country and find out what's available online.

Vatican Museum - Maybe you can't visit the Vatican in person, but at this site you can see images from the tremendous collection of paintings, sculpture and other art housed there. You can even take a look at the Sistine Chapel.

American Memory - Historical Collections for the National Digital Library - The Library of Congress has more than 70 online collections of images from the nation's past. The collections you can see include Baseball Cards 1887-1914, Civil War Photographs, Portraits of the Presidents and First Ladies, Quilts and Quiltmaking in America 1978-1996, and much more. Their search feature allows you to search for an item across all the collections.

Bad Fads Museum - Browse through fashion, collectible, activity and event fads of the last century. The site has some annoying ad banners, but it's definitely worth a few minutes. Check out the origins of bell bottoms, bouffant hairdos, Tie Dye T-shirts, skateboarding, frisbees and lava lamps.

The Complete Works of Shakespeare - You can enjoy the Complete Works.

The EServer at Carnegie Mellon - There are more than 27,000 online works to choose from here...books, drama (both modern and classic), original plays and screenplays, and original and classic poetry. There is a search engine if you want to find something specific.

Project Gutenberg - This online library has thousands of books, most of them classics.

Bulfinch's Mythology - From the gods of Ancient Greece to the legends of King Arthur, this site provides the complete text to the stories that make up Western mythology. It is searchable by keyword.

Arts & Letters Daily - This is an updated report of news, articles, essays, book reviews and opinion from periodicals posted online.

National Geographic - National Geographic online will transport you to the far reaches of the globe with feature stories and amazing photographs. You can also search their archive.

Salon.com - This online magazine has news stories and features on politics, travel, entertainment, food, music, film and much more. It also has a search feature.
