Medical Tips for Burns
First-Degree Burns burn the top of the skin, making it irritated, red, and painful. The area may swell but first-degree burns usually heal in 5 to 6 days.
*Apply water-based lotion.
Second-Degree Burns are deeper than first-degree burns. They destroy some of the skin that will look red and form blisters. These burns are usually painful and heal in 3 to 4 weeks. Scarring may occur.
*Cover blisters with sterile dressings. Clean popped blisters gently and cover.
Third-Degree Burns usually look black and charred. They can be very painful and are life threatening. Scarring may be severe.
*Wash the burn gently, apply antibiotic ointment, and cover with sterile dressing. Get trained medical help immediately.
