The Epilepsy Association of the Midlands (EAM) is a voluntary organization dedicated to the prevention and control of epilepsy and its consequences and to helping those with epilepsy, their families and other concerned individuals.
About 1 out of every one hundred South Carolinians has epilepsy. That's 50,000 - 60,000 in just South Carolina. Each year in the United States, 100,000 new cases are identified ~ 30,000 from head injuries recieved in auto or motorcycle accidents. For 50% of cases, there is not an identical cause.
EAM provides a bi-monthly Newsletter and bi-monthly Self-Help Group meetings, counseling, referrals to professionals, workshops, education and information, advocacy, support and friendship through our local chapter system. Provides discount anti-convulsant medication through membership. Summer camp for children with epilepsy, ages 6-14 and our Epilepsy Transition Program (Employment or School).
Misinformation and misinformed attitudes are a bigger problem for those with seizure disorders than the condition itself. EAM explains the true facts about epilepsy through the media and public education presentations. We provide information to such employers and lawmakers, who make decisions that may impact on persons with epilepsy. EAM is a member of the Governor's Developmental Disabilities Council representing epilepsy. Member of the South Carolina Protection and Advocacy Council, Client Assistance Program Council, Prevention Council, and Hearing Office for District 1.
EAM will work on a one to one basis with parents and children. We also provide special information kits and workshops for public and private school teachers and students.
Community health education about epilepsy is important. We have films and speakers for various groups, community exhibits, workshops and presentations. Doctors and other health care professionals look to EAM for new information as well. Training of service personnel in recognition and first aid of epilepsy is a major function of the Association. Our Transition Program is a very important pilot project that will make a major impact in the future.
