Lexington Medical Center Services
MEDICAL SERVICES
Throughout the 1980s and early 90s, Lexington Medical Center has added technology and services to fill the needs of Lexington County's growing population. It is still the only full-service hospital in the Midlands with all private rooms.
Cardiovascular Services
People with a history of heart or lung disease can learn ways to control them through Lexington Medical Center's Cardiovascular Services. LMC started the Midlands first Pulmonary Rehabilitation program to help people with chronic lung diseases such as asthma. Exercise physiologists and specially-trained nurses monitor the patients progress on interval training designed to build endurance. The Cardiac Rehabilitation program also uses interval training to help people with heart disease build endurance. They learn good nutrition in a teaching kitchen on campus and stress reduction techniques in workshops given throughout the year.
Laboratory
Lexington Medical Center has a full-service lab on site which means that patients get results of test quickly and accurately.
Outpatient Services
In late 1993, it opened a state-of-the-art outpatient wing, making it a leader in outpatient and emergency services.
Physical Rehabilitation
Lexington Medical Center provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy using the most advanced equipment and techniques. Therapy is offered to inpatients and outpatients.
Radiation Oncology
In September 1993 Lexington Medical Center opened the most advanced Radiation Oncology unit in the state. Its Linear Accelerator is one of five of its kind in the country. Its power is unmatched in the Southeast which means that patients can get treatment for cancer without suffering many of the side effects radiation therapy usually entails.
Radiology
Lexington Medical Center offers a full range of radiology services including mammography, nuclear medicine, CT scans. Its Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has the most powerful magnet in the Midlands which means that doctors can find tumors and hairline fractures that escape X-rays without resorting to exploratory surgery.
Surgery
Lexington Medical Center performs more than 12,000 surgeries-- including cancer surgery, orthopedic surgery, thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, and endoscopy--a year. Almost 5,000 of those procedures are outpatient.
Women's Services
Lexington Medical Center has long been the leader in the Midlands in women's services. It was the first hospital to offer the midwife alternative. It is the first and only hospital to offer Doula--pronounced "doo'-la"--service. (Doula is a Greek word meaning "woman helping woman." Doulas help expectant mothers and fathers relax during labor and delivery and have a more
memorable, enjoyable experience.)
Lexington Medical Center opened a 20-bed special care nursery for premature babies or newborns with lung or heart problems. The staff on the unit encourages contact between the parents and the baby through Kangaroo Care. In Kangaroo Care, the baby is placed next to the parent's chest. The skin-to-skin contact speeds the baby's recovery and promotes bonding between the parents and newborn.
The Women's Breast Center installed three state-of-the-art mammography machines in 1994. The machines are patient friendly and eliminate much of the discomfort women feel with traditional mammography units.

LMC-Irmo offers many of the same services as Lexington Medical Center in a location convenient to the Lake Murray area. LMC- Irmo offers radiology, lab, and outpatient surgery services. Its urgent care unit sees 22,000 people each year. It is also the site of health and wellness classes, health fairs, and other community activities throughout the year.
