The Media Center is a focal point for McCants Elementary School. Aside from being the school library, it contains 7 networked information based computers, the network file server, lazerdisc equipment, videotape equipment and a videotape library. The networked computers use WINNEBAGO to access the card catalog and as a check-out system, and Accelerated Reader as a computer based reading program. During the school year, the media specialist coordinates the BOOK-IT reading program, the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program, and arranges for speakers to address students. The Mentor program is also centered here.

Accelerated Reader
The Accelerated Reader Program combines the best in
children's literature with software that tests comprehension.
Children read selected books and take tests. Points are given
for correct answers. The participants then visit the Accelerated
Reader store to spend their points for prizes.

BOOK-IT Reading Program
BOOK-IT is a national reading program sponsored by Pizza Hut. Teachers set reading goals for their classes. If the goals are met, by all students, Pizza Hut supplies FREE pizza for those classes.

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)
RIF is a reading program, sponsored jointly by the federal government and the local school district, designed to provide students with FREE excellent books for their reading pleasure. McCants' students select books at three distributions.
