WELLSPRING RESOURCE CENTER IS...

a not-for-profit volunteer holistic health advocacy organization. In terms of health and healing, Wellspring defines "holistic" or "wholistic" as taking not only the physical body into account, but also the mental, spiritual, and emotional aspects of each unique individual.

Founded in November 1993, and registered with South Carolina's Secretary of State, Wellspring files a financial statement with the State Attorney General each year. Designated a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service, contributions to Wellspring Resource Center are tax-deductible as provided by law. Community support through donations, memorials, and honor gifts make Wellspring programs and services possible.

WELLSPRING...because health is more than the absence of disease.

Wellspring volunteers and supporters believe:

--That we are all whole, whether or not we are experiencing disease or

other life challenges.

--That, as Wellspring Advisory Council member Dr. Bernie Siegel says,

"Even when curing a disease seems unlikely, healing a life is always possible."

--That healing is a process unique to each individual. Our role is to support each person’s process with compassion and respect.

--That personal power is the ability to choose our attitudes about our life circumstances and ourselves.

--That informed individuals who understand available options can become empowered to make wise health decisions and take an active role in their healing process.

--That everyone, including people managing serious illness, can achieve life enrichment.

Wellspring programs and services are not intended to replace professional medical or mental health treatment. Rather, they are intended to complement medical/mental health treatment and support optimal health maintenance.

Directory of Holistic Health Resources

Wellspring published its first Directory in January 1998, and will be an annual project. The Directory contains information on a variety of complementary modalities/services (such as acupuncture, homeopathy, massage and bodywork, etc.) and products (essential oils, dietary supplements, etc.) for enhancing health and well being. Some local providers are listed with narrative descriptions of the services/products they provide as well as national associations, with addresses and phone numbers for referrals, certification information, etc. The Directory also offers an extensive reading list.

To order your copy, please send $5.75 (includes shipping) in check or money order, along with your name and address, to: Wellspring, P. O. Box 6481, Columbia, SC 29260. The Directory is also available for direct purchase at Rosewood Market ($4). Proceeds will offset costs and help fund Wellspring programs and services.

If you know holistic health practitioners who might wish to be listed in the next Directory, they may call (803) 765-9355.

The Prayer Connection

The efficacy of prayer in healing has been demonstrated in clinical studies, and research outcomes are presented in Dr. Larry Dossey’s book, Healing Words. While Wellspring is not a religious organization, volunteers support each individual’s love-based spiritual path. If you or someone you know would like to request prayers for healing, or if you would like to be a part of this program, please call Cora Plass at (803) 765-1510.

The Person-to-Person Network

This program is in the formative stages and will link individuals who have used non-medical methods to complement treatment or for general well being with persons considering the same methods.

If you would be willing to share your experiences with others, call Dillard Thompson who is coordinating this project at (803) 765-9355.

The Wellspring Therapeutic Relaxation Project

This is a pilot project implemented at Richland Memorial Hospital’s (now Palmetto Richland Memorial) Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Unit. The program was designed for patients and their families to ease the stress inherent in the hospital experience. The next Therapeutic Relaxation initiative is planned for persons undergoing dialysis.

Wellspring Library

The collection of library books and tapes is growing slowly--just the right speed until there’s enough space and a system in place for a full-service lending library.
