Graduation Devotional
by Charles Ben Watson, Jr., Valedictorian
Lexington High School Commencement
Sunday, May 23, 1999
University of South Carolina Coliseum, Columbia, South Carolina

So much emphasis today is placed upon what we have – Who lives in the
biggest house, who drives the most expensive car, or who wears the
newest designer clothes?  So much has this become a tool of measurement
that a grave misconception has been formed.  For now it seems as though
“Who we are” is defined by “what we have.”  But is the basis of our
existence only this?

It is the hope of many here today – parents, teachers, friends – that a
seed of knowledge and experience from these our previous years has been
planted within us. And hopefully, throughout the years to come through
times of sunshine and through times of rain, this seed will grow to
fruition.

But once you bear fruit – and I don’t simply mean prosperity,
but also the fruits of wisdom and goodness – don’t save it away for
yourself, instead take these gifts and impart them to others.  Help
plant a seed in the mind of someone else.  Give of yourself freely.

And also for yourself, do not use your gifts to attain solely material ends
– houses, cars, or clothes – but devote your gifts to seeking the
truth.  There is a “one truth” within us all.  It is by this that we are
defined.  And once we have begun to touch on the truth in our lives, we
no longer worry about the things we once did.  It’s not longer the
biggest house for now you live in a kingdom, a car no longer matters for
we are where we want to be, and clothes are secondary for we are clothed
in the armor of righteousness.

So, may your drive in life be to attain the truth and fulfillment.  By doing so, you will become wealthy beyond your wildest imagination with a treasure that will not perish.  Living your life this way may not fill your pockets, but it will fill your life and your heart.
